Patient Testimonial

I have never been to an orthopaedic/sports medicine facility for treatment.   In my mind, these are reserved for serious athletes.   I am a late bloomer in the field of exercise, having started a weight training/cardio program five years ago on my 50th birthday in an attempt to improve my bone density, which was quite low.   After nearly ten years of taking medication, there had not been a great improvement and I was determined to try to improve things on my own. I will be 55 in June and have not taken any medication for two years.

I have never thought of myself as an athlete – my goal in starting an exercise program was simply to improve my health.   Surprisingly, I really started to enjoy it. I grew up in a time when there was not much encouragement for women in athletics. When I suffered some minor injuries this year, I was reluctant to go to anywhere that had the words “sports medicine” in its name because I don’t see myself falling into this category. I felt that this wasn’t the right place for me and if anything, that the doctors would be amused at my being there.   My exercise buddy of five years had just had shoulder surgery at Franklin Orthopaedics and recommended them highly. She felt the same as me prior to her first visit, and was pleasantly surprised to find that she was wrong. On her recommendation, I made an appointment.

My experience at the clinic was surprisingly positive. The staff - from the front desk to the examining room – were professional and friendly. Dr. Greg seemed genuinely happy to meet me and was attentive (not amused) when hearing about my exercise program and goals for maintaining it. (At the time, I had no idea that I was the 30,000th patient to walk through the doors of the facility.)    He was respectful of my experience and encouraged, rather than berated me.   He referred to me as the “over-50 athlete,” the same term that one of the trainers at the “Y” had used to describe me a couple of months ago.   It was as amusing to hear it the second time as it had been the first. I imagined how my high school PE teacher would have laughed to hear it even once, as I was not one of her star pupils.

After some weeks of physical therapy and treatment, I am well on the road to recovery. I am grateful to the staff at Franklin Orthopaedics for helping me continue to maintain my goals for a healthier lifestyle and like my exercise buddy, I would highly recommend them to anyone.
